5 Islam And Tolerance
Treatment of Non-Muslims By The Prophet (May Allah’s Peace and Blessings be Upon Him) of Islam
Episode 82

By Ibn Zaib Bhikaari

As Muslims we are the followers of an extremely well-mannered Prophet (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him). He had an exemplary attitude viz a viz non-Muslims. You read in the previous episodes. Now read about the enlightened lives of his followers. Think, the power of decision rests with you.

Hazrat Syed Ishaq Gaazoni Lahore (may Allah shower his blessings upon him) was among the great and highly ranked shaikhs of his time. He came to Lahore after getting a divine, invisible, indication. Your courteous behavior was not only with Muslims, rather it was exemplary towards non-Muslims too. The thing that was most prominent in the mirror of your behavior was your softness and humility. It is written in tohfa-tul-waasileen that a very affluent person who was very famous in his area came to you (RA). You (RA) did not pay any attention towards him. He became very angry with you and started abusing you. But you remained quiet. So much so that there was not a sign of any annoyance on the face. When that person kept on badmouthing you for a long time and kept on abusing you. And did whatever he could do. Then a person from among the audience of the gathering said to you (RA), ”Hazrat this person is behaving rudely in front of you for a long time, we cannot endure this. Please give us permission so that we punish him or you (RA) curse him with a bad prayer so that he meets his logical end.” You (RA) raised your hands in front of Allah Almighty for this rude person and started saying with a lot of humility and softness, ”O Allah, I have forgiven him. You should also forgive him.” And for a while he kept on praying like this slowly. You had hardly finished praying that that irreverent fell down on the floor and became unconscious. And he remained unconscious for around two hours. When he gained consciousness he came to Hazrat Shaikh and started saying that hazrat I made a mistake, please forgive me. About the importance of courtesy towards Muslim and non-Muslim you used to say that, ”People should make use of forgiveness. And in his attitude and character one should be a model of sunnah of hazrat Muhammad (may Allah’s peace be upon him). The purpose of tableegh (daawa, preaching Islam to humanity) cannot be fulfilled otherwise.
