Ubqari Magazine - February 2019

A wise man is one who guards his tongue from dispraising and condemning others

Before sleep take 1 cup of hot water add 4 tea spoon of this syrup and mix half lemon juice in it.Sip slowly to get rid of the cough.

During the winter months the pan vendors prepare "malaithi paan" combining green cardamon, cloves, peppermint and lime (chunnna) with licorice (mulathi) in beetle leaf (paan). This is an excellent old remedy for dry coughs as well. Licorice is a plant root that is sweet tasting.

Uses of Licorice: Best cure for (phlegm) cough. It thins and loosens the phlegm. Good for thirst and acidity. Strengthens the tendons, gets rid of phlegm, dry throat and clears the chest. In Europe teas are prepared of Licorice root and linseed (alisee) for chronic coughs and it helps soothe the throat of dryness and itchiness.

London based Dr.’s remedy for cough: In the west, herbal and naturopathic doctors use it to treat urinary and intestinal discharge. British Dr. Melon’s cure for cough is as follows

(huwashafee)

Linseed                       12g

Licorice root                25g

Raisins                      125g

Water                          2L

Combine all the above in water and bring to boil. Simmer until 1L water is left. To this liquid add 500gs of brown sugar. Strain and store this liquid in a clean glass container.

In a cup of hot/warm water combine 4 teaspoons of the above mixture with the juice of half a lemon. Sip slowly at night before going to bed to get rid of the cough.

Licorice root helps heal the intestine and the stomach wounds/sores.

In the Northern provinces of China, Licorice root is used in combination with other herbs to prepare youth invigorating drinks. It is also used in the treatment of snake and scorpion bites. A paste of its leaves is used to treat head wounds/boils and for getting rid of underarm odors. Licorice root is also helpful in treating colds, flu, asthma. It also heals stomach and intestine wounds.

Side effects of Licorice root: According to the European and American research Licorice contains an extract “glycyrrhizin” which when ingested in large doses increases sodium and decreases potassium in the body. According to a British expert if 13OZ of Licorice root is consumed twice a day over a few weeks, it will cause water retention and decrease potassium levels, resulting in “high blood pressure”. According to Dr James Duke, a herbal expert of the American agriculture department, Licorice root not only heals the stomach and intestines but also has properties to heal cancer.

According to these experts Licorice root taken at a low dosage is more effective. However, a person with high blood pressure should consult with their doctor before using Licorice, because large doses used over a long period of time may cause heart/cardiac problems.
