Sahabi(RA)! Whose Knowledge was recognized himself by the Holy Prophet(PBUH)

Ubqari Magazine - March 2014

I am familiar with his splendid qualities. He comes home chuckling and leaves with a smile. When asked for something, he is never a miser and if you remain silent, he does not wait for you to ask. If you do anything for him, he is grateful and if a mistake is committed, he forgives.

Hazrat Salim رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہ is highly respected amongst Sahaba رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہم اجمعیین  for his beautiful recitation and Hifz al Quran. Hazrat Abdullah Bin Umar رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہ  says prior the arrival of the Holy Prophet , Hazrat Salim رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہ used to do Imamat of all the Muhajireen at Masjid al Quba in Madinah.  (Bukhari. Kitaab As Salaat, Chapter: Imamat al Abd Wal Maula)

Beautiful voice of Hazrat Salim رضیا للہتعالیٰعنہ: Hazrat Salim رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہ was amongst the group of those elderly people who was considered by Sahaba رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہم اجمعیین  as Imam in the art of Qirat. The Holy Prophet used to say: ‘Obtain Quran from four gentlemen, who are Ibn e Masood رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہ , Salim Maula Abi Huzaifa رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہ , Abi Bin Kaab رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہ  and Maaz Bin Jabal رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہ .’ Allah Almighty had given him such a beautiful voice that when he used to recite the Quranic verses, people got enthralled and passerbys would stop and listen. Once Um al Momineen Hazrat Ayesha رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہا reached late to visit the Holy Prophet . When he asked her the reason for delay, she replied: ‘A Qaari was reciting. I was listening to him and thus got delayed.’ She praised the beautiful voice so much that the Holy Prophethimself went out to see the Qaari. It was Hazrat Salim رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہ. The Holy Prophet said: ‘Thanks to Allah Almighty that he made you part of my Ummah.’ (Asaaba. Tazkara e Salim رضیا للہتعالیٰعنہ)

He was the Imam of Masjid e Quba. The first of Muhajireen, which also included Hazrat Umar and Hazrat Abu Bakar رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہم اجمعیین  , often used to offer prayers behind him. In short, the blessings of Quran al Karim and knowledge had granted him unusual greatness and status. Hazrat Umar Farooq رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہ. used to praise him a lot. It was to an extent that at the time of his death, when he announced his will for the appointment of Khalifa, he said: ‘ Had Salim been alive, I would not have let this issue be presented in the Shuraa (council) .’ which means that he would have nominated Hazrat Salim رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہ as his successor. (Asad al Ghaba, Volume 2, page 246)

A vessel filled with knowledge : All the Sahaba رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہم اجمعیین  agreed with Hazrat Abdullah Bin Masood رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہ  for his great knowledge and expertise of Ijtehaad. Whenever Hazrat Umar رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہ  used to see him, he would rejoice and say: ‘ He is like a vessel filled with knowledge.’ Once some Kufis praised his piousness, humility and knowledge in front of Hazrat Ali al Murtaza رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہ . He asked : ‘ Are you saying all this with a true heart?’ They replied: ‘ Yes.’ He then said : ‘ Whatever good views you have about Abdullah Bin Masood رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہ  , I think him even better than that.’ (Tabqaat Ibn e Saad)

Hospitality - A special quality of Hazrat Talha رضیا للہتعالیٰعنہ : Hospitality was a special quality of Hazrat Talha رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہ . Once three men from Sani Azrah came to Madinah and embraced Islam. The Holy Prophet asked as to who will take the responsibility to serve them? Hazrat Talha رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہ stood up and said: ‘Me my lord .’ and brought them home happily. Two of these gentlemen embraced Shahadat in different Ghazawaat. The third one also expired at the house of Hazrat Talha رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہ after a long time. He had developed such companionship with his guests that he would always remember them and see them in his dreams. Once he saw in his dream that he is standing at the door of heaven alongwith his three guests. But the one expired last is in the front and the first one to embrace Shahadat is at the last. Hazrat Talha رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہ was surprised on this sequence. In dream to the Holy Prophet . He said: ‘Why are you surprised on this? The one who lived longer had more opportunity for good deeds and praying Almighty. That is why he was leading his companions for entry in Jannah.’

Sociability : Hazrat Talha رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہ was adored by his wife and children due to his sociability. He would lead a very caring and happy life with his family and which can be understood only by this example. Utba Bin Rabeea’s daughter Umme Abaan was proposed for marriage by several noble gentlemen. But she preferred Hazrat Talha رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہ . When people asked her the reason, she replied: ‘I am familiar with his splendid qualities. He comes home chuckling and leaves with a smile. When asked for something, he is never a miser and if you remain silent, he does not wait for you to ask. If you do anything for him, he is grateful and if a mistake is committed, he forgives.’ (Kanz al Amaal, Volume 6 page 413)

Urge for knowledge : Hazrat Abu Huraira رضی ا للہ تعالیٰ عنہ was very keen to seek knowledge. His urge had reached a level of enviousness. The Holy Prophet himself confirmed his urge for knowledge. Once he asked the Holy Prophet : ‘On the day of Judgment, who will be the lucky one to deserve your () blessings?’ The Holy Prophet replied: ‘Seeing your enviousness for the knowledge of Hadith, I already knew that no one will ask this question before you.’ (Masnad Ahmed Ibn e Hanbal, Volume 2 page 373)
